My book 'Strange Fruit' describes this crisis and its resolution.

A crisis often occurs midway through life. Psychotherapy can be invaluable at this time as the answers come from within ourselves, not from outside. It is a time when we go beyond the normal functioning of mind and can reach new levels of awareness.

Strange Fruit is an example of a spiritual crisis. The title refers (among other things) to its unexpected outcome. Like many people I lived the first part of my life, careless, unaware and half asleep.

A major crisis blasted me out of my complacency and everything I believed was challenged. I was stripped of possessions. and forced to face my greatest fears. What might have worked up to this point was worthless. It was during this struggle in unknown territory that I discovered the value of psychotherapy.
